Ghent Red Light District / Quartier Rouge Gand / Rosse Buurt Gent

I compiled this information during my short visit to Ghent on 12th January 2012. I cannot guarantee total accuracy but at time of writing I believe it is the most up to date and comprehensive record of the red light district you will find (in any language).
Ghent has to be one of the most scenic cities in Europe. It's full of medieval architecture including a cluster of the most spectacular churches. A short way South of these churches and still very much in the city centre is the small red light district consisting of nearly 100 red light windows. Belgradostraat runs South West - North East between Brabantdam and Kiezer Karelstraat and has 29 windows. Typical of Belgium many have names and you will see Salon de Cupido, Venus, Medi, Topas, Eden, Amber, L'Etoile, Orisis and Weisse Rose. A little further South are Pieter Vanderdoncktdoorgang including Glazen Straatje (details lower down page) and Schepenenvijverstraat. There are another 68 or so windows here including Mignon, L'Orchidee, Au Plaish, L'Amour, La Caresse, Bodega, Venus (another), Betty Boop, La Seduction, Unique, Vogue, Babylon, Le Pink, Crystal (opened in 2010/11) and The Crazy Cabaret which looks like a theatre but there just seems to be three windows in the main door way.

Safety and Advice. Unlike nearby Brussels red light district Ghent feels totally safe. There really aren't enough windows for it to have taken over or influenced the local area and doesn't have a seedy feel to it at all. Even the most prudish tourists won't be offended and the attractive glass passage way (Glazen Straatje) is a must if you are in the city for the historic buildings.

Getting there. Trains run regularly from main Brussels stations to Ghent Sint-Pieters and take no more than 40 minutes. This station is in the south and about 20 mins walk to the red light district and city centre. If you are coming down from the North and changing at Antwerp then you should get off at Dampoort (visible in first map below) which is a little closer and to the North East. Trains between Antwerp and Ghent Dampoort take around 50 mins.

Glazen Straatje (Pieter Vanderdoncktdoorgang)

Glazen Straatje is an enclosed section of Pieter Vanderdoncktdoorgang built in 1844. It is a protected historic passageway similar to the posh shopping alleys in Paris. If you enter it from Brabantdam you will have the North West side to your right. The first two windows on both sides are part of Brabantdam shops. A little further you will see the red (and blue) lights indicating you are now in a rather unusual red light district. Above you is an impressive arched glass roof and to both sides are a line of light and dark green painted rooms (well they were when I went, probably pink and purple now) with large windows. If you didn't already know, Glazen Straatje translates to Glass Street and the name is certainly apt.
The only numbers shown are on the doors between the windows. Trying to tie these numbers up with the actual red light windows is not easy. Door 6 for example leads to stairs suggesting 6 is actually a private room upstairs. It mirrors a similar door on the South East side with 5-7 on the frame. This again suggests rooms upstairs and probably not red light windows at ground level. For reference purposes I have introduced my own modified number system where necessary. I believe I have the correct amount of rooms on the North West side but on the South East side I am uncertain. I would have expected an 11 and 11A to mirror 10 and 10A but there's just a single 11 displayed so I don't know if there are one or two rooms. Just to confuse matters further there is another 11 just out side the passage in the street running towards Schepenenvijverstraat. I decided to cover all bases and include three 11s on my map with a question mark. If any Ghent regulars know different please email me- george.map@hotmail.co.uk
