Amsterdam's Red Light District:
Urinal on Oudezijds Achterburgwal

This is one of three permanent urinals in Amsterdam's red light district Holland. This one is on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal near the Peep Show. As a regular visitor to the red light district I find it really funny to see first time tourists reaction to these things. Especially women, they will at first not quite realise what the guy inside is doing. Then there is the shock and ultimately the embarrassed laughter.
I have heard some people saying how you just urinate on the floor but this is not true. There is a drain at ground level that runs into the canal nearby. Users though should be careful since there is often a pool of urine and sometimes worse. So stand well back and don't even think of laying your bag down. Another tip is stay clear of these things when the cleaners are around. They use very high pressure hoses and anyone walking nearby is likely to get at least some spray on them. The cleaners don't seem too bothered and just remember what this spray must contain.
A few years ago on Fridays and Saturday temporary ones were also added. These were totally open and the guys were fully visible from behind. They were pretty disgusting and used to fill up and also tilt on uneven ground.
